Because i feel bored and pretty much at ease on the tram, i can blog again.

Apparently this morning, some guy was carjacked, and in the process, he got stabbed in the ribs and in the throat. The amazing thing is that he survived, so that's well and good. But i feel bad for the guy, losing his car and almost losing his life.

Now, why would someone do shit like this to another person? Could anybody be that desperate? Frankly, in australia i don't think so.

So why? Nobody knows. Its the same pieces of trash encountered at boxhill station who threaten people for food. Maybe if they would lay off the drugs and alcohol, they would have enough money to eat. Or put a bullet in their own heads, so they won't have to spend a cent again.

Anyway, the stabbings had occured about 600kms from melbourne, near the southeastern border of nsw, mildura. So that's not much of a concern for us melbournians.

But, an indian national was jailed 13 years for rape of a woman, a little closer to home this time. He raped a student from melbourne uni in june 09.

Makes you wonder about the safety in melbourne.

So what did i learn from that previous copy-pasted post from somewhere obscure?

I learnt that gossip is good. It entertains people and gives people something to talk about. I don't mind if people talk bad about me and spread rumours about me, as long as i get to do the same about them.

But, whatever you do, DO NOT FUCKING TEACH ME HOW TO COOK MY STEAK.

End rant.
Words of Wisdom

Keep this in mind the next time you are about to repeat a rumour or spread gossip.

In ancient Greece (469 - 399 BC), Socrates was widely lauded for his wisdom.

One day an acquaintance ran up to him excitedly and said, "Socrates, do you know what I just heard about Diogenes?"

"Wait a moment," Socrates replied, "Before you tell me I'd like you to pass a little test. It's called the Triple Filter Test."
'Triple filter?" asked the acquaintance.

"That's right," Socrates continued, "Before you talk to me about Diogenes let's take a moment to filter what you're going to say.

The first filter is Truth. Have you made absolutely sure that what you areabout to tell me is true?"

"No," the man said, "Actually I just heard about it."

"All right," said Socrates, "So you don't really know if it's true or not. Now let's try the second filter, the filter of Goodness. Is what you are about to tell me about Diogenes something good?"

"No, on the contrary..."

"So," Socrates continued, "You want to tell me something about Diogenes that may be bad, even though you're not certain it's true?"

The man shrugged, a little embarrassed. Socrates continued, "You may still pass the test though, because there is a third filter, the filter of Usefulness. Is what you want to tell me about Diogenes going to be useful to me?"

"No, not really."

"Well," concluded Socrates, "If what you want to tell me is neither True nor Good nor even useful, why tell it to me or anyone at all?"

The man was bewildered and ashamed. This is an example of why Socrates was a great philosopher and held in such high esteem.

It also explains why Socrates never found out that Diogenes was shagging his wife.

Tomorrow's the last day of exams, I'm excited but also apprehensive, math has never been my strong point. There's no reasoning and stuff about it, you either know it or you don't. I have 19 hours left. Looks like there's no sleep for me tonight.

Its been awhile hasn't it? Since I've blogged that is. I hereby apologise to whoever that cares, but I was really swamped by nothing.

There really isn't much to blog about anyway, other than the fact that we made nyonya bah zhang over the weekend, and its about finished. They're pretty good, and the cooking video is currently being edited, so look out for that soon.

Trains delayed for two hours, awesome! I like how unreliable the trains are. I'm glad i drove today, but then 2 of my group members are stuck out in the outer suburbs without a train.

Just brilliant. Gotta love how screwed up metro is.

Movies, again.

So within 2 days, we caught Iron Man 2 and Ip Man 2. They were both good, and I did like both movies. But Iron Man 2 felt a little rushed throughout the movie. Whiplash was too easily defeated and it didn't seem like much of a challenge to Iron Man and War Machine. They just blasted whiplash and he was taken out, the fight probably lasted 1minute.

Movies.

Within the past 2 weeks, we (the girlf and i) have caught 3 movies. Date Night, Kick-ass and Clash of the Titans. I'll give a review on each of them from memory.

Date Night:

This is a typical romance comedy, which isnt a bad thing. Why ruin a formula that works? The premise is a married couple whose lives have gotten boring and they steal a table from a couple only to get chased around the city by a gang and making the audience laugh. The show wasn't exactly laugh till you cry, but it was good humour.

There is one notable scene, which was the boat scene, which was hilarious!

And why should you catch the show? Because, there's James Franco, and there's an R8 that gets wrecked. Those 2 points are more than enough. So go catch it if you haven't.

Kick-ass:

The show is about this dude who isn't really anybody in school try and be a superhero without any real skills or powers. He's slightly successful until he gets noticed by 2 other masked vigilantes and subsequently by the city gang boss.

The show's really dark, but with great performances by Nicholas Cage and that 12 year old girl. Its as awesome as it can get. The fights are nicely choreographed and i'd watch it again when it comes out on dvd.

Clash of the Titans:

Centres around a greek demigod dude called Perseus and the usual greek god suspects, Zeus and friends with fiends like medusa and the kraken.

So this dude goes on a journey to avenge his foster family, falls in love with a rather hot greek chick, kills monsters and then finally banishing Hades back into the underworld.

Doesn't seem like much, but the whole show is a visual feast! Everything moves so fluidly. And compared to "Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief", its less of a butcher fest by Hollywood.

Why you should catch it if you haven't? The pegasus' (pegasi for plural?) make it seem like the main character is on shrooms the entire time, with references to Harold and Kumar.

I'm looking forward to Iron Man so much, only 9 more days left!

Singapore its strengthening its dollar against the greenback and thus means a stronger Singapore dollar vs other currencies. The Aussie dollar has fallen against the Singapore dollar slightly in the past 2 days. Lets wait and see....

Temperature.

The temperature now has fallen, having an average maximum temperature of about 20 degrees and an average minimum temperature of about 10. So its constantly around 15 degrees.

The weather's awesome, and there's an area that snowed, called falls creek, i should check it out soon. Snow this year, sounds exciting.

Street trash.

You've got litter on the streets such as cans and paper/plastic bags and wrappers and other unwanted refuse that people discard. And that includes people.

There are 4 or 5 homeless people that come by my workplace, out of that 4 or 5, 1 is an asshole. He never has cash for anything, and he expects to be given food for free. He hasn't come around for awhile now, which is a good thing, since i always have to suppress the urge to bash his cocky debt ridden face in. The other homeless that come by can, surprisingly, pay for their shit.

Then now there are the tiprats and skanks that prowl the area. Youing girls around 15 or 16 pretending to be stranded and asking for money to go home, or begging for drinks citing thirst but refusing water. Its weird isnt it, that they can afford cigarettes but cannot afford to go home.

And finally, the bogan male, the counterpart of the tiprat, acting like punks, probably hiding a blade and generally causing trouble. Someone ought to beat the shit out of them, but i'm no kick-ass, so i'll leave that to someone else.

Work.

Having a part time job is far from lucrative but having the spare cash is a great help most of the time. Being able to afford that extended stay at lakes entrance, and stuff like that. And uni life seems to be less hectic than that hell hole called foundation studies. Even though uni is, in a way, tougher.

Time management is easy, as work is flexible, i can do mornings, then go to school in the afternoon, or vice versa, pretty cool that my job's like that.

And there are the perks, such as free flow fries, might be a one way street to obesity, but i'm controlling myself. And food that isnt sold can be taken home to munch on. The girlfriend loves them fried wings, so most of the time, there are 2 that aren't sold.

And the biggest perk of all should probably be the proximity of this place to home, its a 10min bus ride, that's not considering the wait, which is pretty cool. I could walk home if i wanted to, that's if i wanted to, i'm not usually that crazy.

And so, now i'm at work, i'm functioning less than usual because i'm lacking in sleep, but its alright because i'm hardly busy right now. Things will pick up in an hour or so, but all i'm doing is sitting around.

So what exactly does my job consist of? I man the snackbar, i deep fry stuff, i collect money, i sell drinks, and function like the old indian dude at the mamashop in a singaporean context.

There are drawbacks of course, like getting spluttered by hot oil and being bored now, but i take home 10/hour, and being 10mins away from home, that's not a bad deal, considering the fact that i earn at least double what most part timers get in singapore, and i do close to nothing.

And now, i'm slightly less bored, so i'll open a can of coke, and chill out for a bit.

I had quite a vivid dream last night. Probably reflects one of my greater fears. But i'll talk about some background story first.

The girlfriend's dad has a peculiar definition of half boiled eggs going on in his mind. He thinks half boiled eggs have solid pieces in them, solid hard boiled egg pieces in them. He insists that's the way coffeeshops in singapore does them. I thought differently, but who am i to argue.

My standard of perfect half boiled eggs would be that the whites have become opaque, but still runny, with little or no clear whites to be seen. Giving a fluffy appearance.

So my dream goes like this...

I was going on about my daily routine, which involves waking up, washing up, and preparing my tea and eggs. But the eggs wouldn't come out right, time didn't affect it. No matter how long i steeped the eggs in boiling water, they always came out the same, as per uncle's weird definition of half boiled eggs.

I tried 5 mins, 3mins, and even 1 min, they all came out the same. I was devastated.

That was the bad dream. Yes, i fear not being able to do proper half boiled eggs.

Over the hils and far away.....

They came for him one winter's night.
Arrested, he was bound.
They said there'd been a robbery,
his pistol had been found.

They marched him to the station house,
he waited for the dawn.
And as they led him to the dock,
he knew that he'd been wronged.
"You stand accused of robbery,"
he heard the bailiff say.
He knew without an alibi,
tomorrow's light would mourn his freedom.

Over the hills and far away,
for ten long years he'll count the days.
Over the mountains and the seas,
a prisoner's life for him there'll be.

He knew that it would cost him dear,
but yet he dare not say.
Where he had been that fateful night,
a secret it must stay.
He had to fight back tears of rage.
His heart beat like a drum.
For with the wife of his best friend,
he spent his final night of freedom.

Over the hills and far away,
he swears he will return one day.
Far from the mountains and the seas,
back in her arms he swears he'll be.
Over the hills and far away.

Over the hills and,
over the hills and,
over the hills and far away.

Each night within his prison cell,
he looks out through the bars.
He reads the letters that she wrote.
One day he'll know the taste of freedom.

Over the hills and far away,
she prays he will return one day.
As sure as the rivers reach the seas,
back in his arms he swears she'll be.

Over the hills and far away,
he swears he will return one day.
Far from the mountains and the seas,
back in her arms he swears he'll be.

Over the hills and far away,
she prays he will return one day.
As sure as the rivers reach the seas,
back in his arms is where she'll be.

Over the hills,
over the hills and far away.

Over the hills,
over the hills and far away.

work... feels like guard duty... the only difference? i get paid.

Friday, March 5, 2010

Rudely awakened by some metal clanging sounds, i forced myself back to sleep because it still wasn't time for me to wake up. When it was time to wake, i found someone in the kitchen packing up pots and stuff in the drawers. I was chastised for not clearing some unused stuff in the drawer. Those things had been there since we arrived in melbourne. And so i stated that as a matter of fact, he pulled his initiative bullshit on me.

"You should have the initiative to keep it somewhere"

I told him that if it wasn't mine, and i don't know where its supposed to go, it stays where it is. He didn't seem happy, and he called this gifts my sister bought us, "nonsense". Much like a disused electric convection oven he lugged home from thailand and all sorts of other infrequently used appliances.

Now, scolding me when i have just woken up is not such a good idea, insulting gifts my sister brought for me is even worse. And that conversation wasted 10mins of my life i'll now never get back, i couldn't even finish my tea and microwave some beehoon, and since i learnt nothing new, i brought away nothing from the encounter. I had to leave the house otherwise i'd miss the bus. I normally don't care because i drive to the station, but since he came, well you know the story.

Thus concludes my unpleasant account. In summary, i woke up, got lectured at by a man who wakes at 6 to pack up the kitchen, and lost time i needed for following my morning routine.

Now i have yet to receive compliments for elevating the cleanliness of his garage to that of a level NEVER SEEN BEFORE. That's, what i call initiative, not putting some utensils in a box, leaving it in the garage, and then forgetting about it.

And i have also yet to see demonstration of his so called initiative. I paid for his dinner, i don't see my money back. WHERE'S THE FUCKING INITIATIVE!

If this kind of shit happens twice a week, i will snap by the 5th week, or before. I'm glad i'm finally employed, out of sight, out of mind.

She's finally going away, one irritant gone is great! Although i would have preferred both but i can't ask for too much. She's going to be taking a cab to the airport, and i'm glad she's doing just that. That leaves the the car free. I hope. I would tip the cab driver 10 dollars just because he's taking my trash away.

Just saying.

Daily, my patience is being tested, usually i would have blown up already. Yesterday, i was told to use less oil in my cooking, and had someone inferior at cooking forcefully instruct me, her way. Her words WILL be ignored though. I will not have someone less able in the subject matter of cooking than me instruct me. It does not matter that she's older, she sucks at cooking, period.

She comments on our sleeping habits, whatever we do, there's something bad about it. We knew it was bad, but if i had to choose between 4 months of mandai hill camp and 4 months of their presence, i choose the army. Even if S3 branch is screwed up.

I feel powerless. Outdated old fools who don't even know how to use the internet are trying to teach me how to live. Now all i can do is to ignore.

And, a kitchen counter top made of a material that has to be kept dry at all times belongs to a showroom, not a real house that does cooking. Where is the wisdom in selecting a kitchen counter top material that is easily damaged by water and stuff?
I've always chosen function over form.

Swallowing pride is not easy, since you all know i'm pretty prideful. Now, the happiest day of march will be the day that meddlesome witch leaves. And the happiest day of june will be the day her husband leaves. Perhaps.

Her voice just pisses me off now, it irks me. It comes as no surprise, as she has nothing positive to say, i don't need her favor anyway. I'm amazed at how calculating she is, she isn't even cantonese like jeremy is.

Train has no air-conditioning. Its a long ride to school. Damn i should have taken the car. Its only with this new operator that you see trains with no air-con. Ridiculous, in summer and on a 33deg day. Which reminds me, the last time i encountered a non air-con train was on a 39deg day. Sounds like they're trying to save on energy.

Imagine trying to get somewhere like an interview, and the train has no air-con on a 39deg day, that's almost like killing your chances at the job interview. Nobody would want to hire a sweaty stinky dude. Well i wouldn't. But seriously. 5.80 for no air-con, its sad. I took more trains when the previous operator was in, not once i encountered no air-con. I've taken the train maybe 20 times or so with this new operator, and i've encountered the no air-con twice!

Sucks! On a happier note, i made my own bahkwa and peanut cookies. Happy stuff, there's a place that sells bahkwa but i'm not sure how good they are, but at least they're proper squares unlike mine. We'll see, maybe next year i'll muster the courage to grab some and try.

The apple sighPhone is rife with problems, like screens cracking with just one drop, shitty battery life, and pointless apps that sap your time away. Get something else, even a motorola, they're more durable.

Foundation is ending. And with that, freedom for a month or so. By freedom, i mean freedom to find a job and actually earn some cash. So i don't have to take money from my mom. Well, take less money anyway. Since being a part timer means i don't take in much cash.

I'm on a surprisingly empty train. It does seem kinda weird because its 8am in the morning, people should be rushing to work and what not. Weird stuff happening.
